Dead is the New Black, by Marlene Perez
Rating: 5 Blogs
Daisy Giordano is what her family calls a “norm,” meaning she has no psychic ability, unlike her mother and two sisters – or so they think. When strange things start happening around Daisy, she blames her sisters’ psychic abilities – Poppy’s gift of telekinesis and Rose’s gift of telepathy. However, Daisy eventually has to face the possibility that her latent psychic gifts are finally showing themselves.

As if high school isn’t hard enough when you’re dealing with possible psychic abilities, having a crush on your best friend can throw things out of whack. Ryan Mendez is hot, of that there is no doubt, but Daisy figures she’s stuck in the friend category forever. Little does she realize that Ryan thinks of her as so much more.

High school angst, first love, psychics… it’s a lot to deal with, you’d think that would be plenty to fill up Daisy’s plate, but apparently not. The universe decides to add a psionic vampire who is draining the life-force of the cheerleaders at both Daisy’s school and a neighboring school. Daisy’s mom is hot on the case, along with Ryan’s dad. However, the two teens decide to lend a helping hand and do some sleuthing themselves. What better way to investigate than to join the squad? it takes a lot of time and a lot of snooping, but eventually Daisy and Ryan unveil the culprit.

Dead is the New Black was an easy and quick read, but I really did love it! Matter of fact, the moment I closed the book, I reached for the sequel to find out what happens next. If you enjoy suspense, mystery, and a blossoming romance, Dead is the New Black is definitely the book for you. While this book is geared toward pre-teens and teens, I think adults will enjoy it as well – I know I did!

There was a surprise around every corner and you never knew just what would happen next. A page turner to the very end, Dead is the New Black has a permanent home on my bookshelf!
